Sutton - Local History

The Sutton area has been inhabited at least since the Middle or New Stone Age times, crossed as it is by the spring line of the North Downs where the many springs and ponds offered access to water.  To the north , the lowland bordering the Thames was marshy and difficult to settle, while the Weald to the South was densely forested.

Sutton, Cheam, Beddington, Carshalton and Wallington all owe their origins to the spring line.

Carshalton is associated with great houses, Carshalton Park House, The Oaks and Carshalton House.  Only the latter still stands in the grounds of St Philomena’s School, but The Oaks which was once the home of the Earl of Derby lives on since it gave its name to the famous horse race The Oaks.  Its site is now OaksPark.  Beeches Lodge is situated very close if not in the original grounds owned by the Earl of Derby.
